Staying Calm in the Eye of the Storm

If you don’t realize that we’re living in what are overtly challenging times, then you’re probably not paying attention. In the micro sense, it seems everybody I know is going through something on a personal level. In the macro sense, these personal journeys are being exacerbated by threats of nuclear attacks, political breakdowns, financial crises, racial tension, mass shootings, devastating earthquakes, erupting volcanoes, merciless wildfires, storm-of-the-century hurricanes, and more. It is indeed a sign of the times…but I’m not playing the game, and I invite you to do the same.

If you believe your thoughts and feelings have an effect on your reality, the moment you react to these external events with survival emotions, you begin putting more of your attention on them, and if you’re putting your attention on these event (events over which you have no control), you’re giving away your power to them. Every time you react with fear and anxiety, because fear and anxiety are emotions and emotions are energy, they only serve to feed the next moment of unrest. What we need to learn how to do in this moment of history is to be in the stillness—to become the eye of the hurricane. The eye of a hurricane is a place of calm, around which spins the storm. We become the eye when we pull ourselves out of the chaos and into the present moment. This is, after all, why we do all the training we do—because it’s in the eternal present moment where all of creation is engendered. By regulating internal emotions independent of external conditions, this is how we begin to master our environment.

Humanity is in the throes of a push and pull whereby there’s an ever-growing collective consciousness that wants to evolve, yet old ways of being and outdated modes of consciousness are struggling to hold on to the known. Depending on the lens through which you view this idea, these struggles could range anywhere from the world’s power structures all the way down to our individual egos. The more you react to your outer world and keep your attention on emotionally charged issues, the more you feed the problems because it’s your energy that keeps them alive. Multiply that by a million, or a billion, and it seems obvious why things might seem like they are getting worse. The stronger your emotional reaction to external events, the more you’re displacing your energy in the opposite direction of creation—creative energy that you could turn inward and use for creating a better life, healing your body, or empowering your energy into a new experience, to name but a few.

While we need to be cognizant and vigilant of injustices in our society, I would encourage you from time to time to disconnect from the news, and if all you see is tragedy and negativity in your social-media news feeds, perhaps disconnect from them as well. If you don’t want to completely disconnect, then be a force for adding light and love to those social feeds. Better yet, in your day-to-day life, perform a random act of kindness for a stranger, call someone you haven’t talked to in a long time, forgive someone or forgive yourself for something you’ve been holding on to. At the very least, be loving and kind to yourself and those around you, because everyone is going through their own challenges.

Remember—fear and anxiety result from anticipation of events that have not yet happened, and as we know, we are the creators of our reality. If you find yourself spinning out in your mind into an unknown future or regretting about the past, just pull yourself back into the present moment. Why? Because when you change your energy in the present moment, you change your future.  That’s being the best example of change—changing your choice—in a world that looks like it might be falling apart.

It’s human to react to these global events, so if you do, just don’t spend a lot of time there. Just get over it. Don’t talk about them, give them energy, give them life, or make them something else. Don’t propagate them, because when you begin to tell stories about the events, you feed them.

Now is not a time to contract. Now is a time to expand into love, after all, love conquers fear.

I agree. Abraham says that by focusing on the negative or the negative person we dislike we are attracting more events and more negativity from that person. I believe that all the turmoil in this country and the storms is a reflection of the negativity we are feeling and projecting outward. It’s time to focus on peace and love and forgive those you believe are doing wrong.

    So true Dr Joe…
I have a few friends that believe I am ‘burying my head in the sand’ by not wanting to know what the daily news has to report each day. I believe I can be of more use to the peacefulness of the world by staying centered and quiet. The less the reaction in me, the more balanced the energy is that I emit. Thank you for sharing your wise word.s

Beautiful and timely post. I’m inspired to post a link to this video where this beautiful spiritual Master encourages us in the specific case of terrorist attacks, to pray not only for the victims but also for the perpetrators. Sending love, even when it’s difficult, allows us and the planet to expand rather than to contract in a powerful way.

The world is full of social activist. As the number increases of humans turning their attention to enlightenment, love, and laughter, we approach the 100th monkey effect and the collective starts to shift. This is the great paradigm shift that has been talked about and that is upon us. Blessing to all.

I agree with the thrust of this article but I think its a very fine line to turn away from global “news” and events and to slip into the comfort zone and thereby ignorance. Reacting with fear and anxiety is of course not what we want. But we cannot turn away either. The world is a mirror of our internal states and we have allowed these shadows to manifest in the world unchallenged. Perhaps we need to cultivate discrimination and discernment in rooting out so much of our own self-deception, a process which must go parallel with highlighting deception and lies in the external world. This is surely what leads to knowledge (rather than belief) correctly applied. We can’t do that unless we are suitably informed about the world. You stated: “don’t talk about them”. How else are we to gain knowledge and network for a better world? Denial is what got us into this mess in the first place. Spreading love and light is part of that but gaining knowledge in order to know when our choices are real choices and our actions real actions is crucial.

There is a big difference between placing our attention on obvious injustices and lies in order to indulge our emotions and focusing on these issues in order to bring them into the light of objective analysis. You do not feed problems by focusing on the negative, only if your intent is to add to the noise; by indulging in emotional reaction devoid of comprehension and the will to know. Attention depends entirely on one’s intent to liberate or to selfishly indulge our emotions as a tension release. If it is to transmute those negative energies by spreading knowledge of the truth of the situation – as best we can – then this is the heart and head working together and therefore remaining compassionate but detached from emotional reaction. We need to look into the shadows in ourselves and the world to transmute them by understanding and acknowledging their presence not pretending that only love and light is the route to liberation.

The eye of the storm is only peaceful when it is not based on denial. I know that’s not what you were saying and of course its necessary not to identify with bad news so that we become incapacitated. But I do think that these negative events are showing us that we need to dig deep not to just simply fall back into a perceived bliss of belief masquerading as “calm”. We need to gain spiritual will and courage. That’s surely what gives the calm in the eye of the storm.

Thank you! I’m so grateful that Joe keeps putting forth this perspective. It feels as though this way of seeing things was quite popular and common 10-20 years ago, but now it has kind of gone out of fashion, and people on spiritual paths are falling into a victim mentality of “it’s all out there and we should just be mindful of the terrible times we’re in” instead of a more radical approach of truly seeing ourselves as the hologram and working to shift it from the inside.

What I do is send Love and Light to the situation & the people, for everyone’s highest good and the good of all concerned. Then I see myself protected in Light and I try to emanate and project as much love as I can from my core. I feel like I have done something – and I have! Yet, in a way that is uplifting and not getting caught in the drama. (Finally!), I truly know that we are all powerful creator beings. My prayer is that we all see (myself included) all that is available to us – which is everything – and how blessings of every sort are always present in the present. Which reminds me… time to meditate! XO

now is also not a time to seek spiritual bypass. Small acts of kindness and prayers and emanating life from the stillness is important. And we also have to make changes to our social system. We need to be part of the process of replacing systems of oppression (at every scale from persons to ecosystems) with systems that are in alignment with stillness… contracting into our own bubble of bliss is also a contraction that doesn’t not unfold life.

This is very much a biblically based approach, too – both about forgiveness, of course, and also about diverting attention from the bad to the good, ala Philippians 4:8: “..whatever is true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things.” I love the word “dwell” in this context. It’s like Rick Hanson’s “taking in the good.” Thanks for the reminder! It’s so easy to get pulled into all that is not true, honorable, lovely, etc. I’ve come to learn that sometimes, though, we can’t easily dwell on the good, e.g., when we or loved ones are in deep pain or grief. In those moments, my trauma therapist reminds about non-resistance and remembering the hard state will pass. God bless.
