When You Stop Looking and Start Becoming

All creation begins with a thought. When we become aware that we don’t have something we want, we naturally experience the emotion of lack from not having what we desire. This is how we begin creating through our imagination. It is our natural, innate propensity to be creators at play. The more we think about these things and imagine what it would be like to have them, the more our brain naturally starts creating pictures and images of what our future could look like. This is what it means to dream the dream of the future.

This process begins in the frontal lobe—the brain’s creative center. When it switches on, it begins recruiting circuits in the rest of the brain that are related to things we’ve learned and/or experienced in our lives. As a result, our brain begins firing in new sequences, patterns, and combinations. Each time we do this we’re not only changing our mind—because the mind is the brain in action—but we’re beginning to change our brain.

If we keep thinking about making that future become a reality, we naturally begin to insert ourselves into the scene of our future. According to research on mental rehearsal, once we immerse ourselves in that scene, changes begin to take place in our brain. Therefore each time we do this, we’re laying down new neurological tracks (in the present moment) that literally change our brain to look like the brain of our future. In other words, the brain starts to look like the future we want to create has already happened.

If we are truly engaged in this process with passion, we might begin to emotionally experience our future through thought alone. In fact, when we are feeling the emotions of our future—whether that’s gratitude, joy, freedom, abundance, enthusiasm, love, and so on—the creative thoughts in your mind can become the experience. As the body receives the chemical signals of these emotions, essentially the body is receiving the signal that the event has already occurred. If the latest research on epigenetics tells us that the environment signals the gene, and the end product from an experience in the environment is an emotion, as we embrace the emotion ahead of the environment, we are signaling the gene ahead of the environment.

Since genes make proteins and proteins are responsible for the structure and function of the body, if it’s done properly we reap the physical results of these actions and begin to embody our future before it’s made manifest. In a sense, we are biologically wearing our dream.

No matter what we’re trying to create in our lives, whether it’s a relationship, a job, a house, health, a calm mind, or a peaceful heart, in thinking about those things and desiring them, we may know what we want in thought, however many times we experience the emotion of lack in the way we feel. That’s because we’re conditioned to live in a 3D world and we want immediate gratification or relief from that lack. In other words, if we don’t get what we want right away, the lack from not experiencing it with our senses reinforces the absence of not having it.

Here-in lies our biggest challenge as creators. The lack we live by each day when we notice it hasn’t happened yet causes us to feel separate from our dreams and we no longer believe in our future any longer. That’s because we are back in the emotions of our past—and we can’t see our future through the window of our past. When we live in lack while we are still creating our future, over time we stop creating and wait for something outside of us to take away the lack we feel inside of us. But it is the lack that is keeping our dreams at arm’s length in the first place.

But what if you lived by the emotions of your future every day? You would feel like your future has already happened and less likely to be separate from your dreams. That’s how we believe in a future we have not yet experienced with our senses, yet we keep it alive in our mind and body.

Great article! I am kind of getting used to or waiting for Saturdays to read the next one. Regarding the subject, I’m working on it every day. I’ve acquired the ability to tame my body, to stay calm during stressful moments, to feel bliss for nothing more than being alive, only by focusing on my body. I know my future-present moments will be beautiful because I’m doing just that, living every day imagining what I want to experience. My analytical mind, although it is very useful at times and I appreciate it very much, I keep it quiet most of the time to let my imagination fly. Thank you for writing these articles!

It calms me and I sleep better, it takes pressure of me. Something I have noticed I have been struggeling with through my whole life. Pressure is stress, and stress hinders us from being creative and imaginative. Keep on, you’re doing great. Love ♥

Very nice words but how can an abandon child ever stop wondering why his mother left him on a doorstep of a house at only a few days old?
How can such rejection from birth ever work its way out of heart and mind?

    • Agnes June 2, 2018 at 12:29 pm - Reply

I can only imagine the feelings of abandonment as I never personally experienced it and it hurts even at that level. I can only try to imagine a young mother so hurt and broken herself but selflessly giving you a kiss with tears in her eyes as she prayed for you to have a better life leaving you at that door step.
Imagine that beautiful, young, scared woman and send her love and thanks every day – knowing that one day you will be together in her arms.
Be well – be at peace.

    • Deb June 2, 2018 at 3:36 pm - Reply

Immediately my thought was that the only way a mother could leave a child is because she could not care for you and love you as much as someone else, and she wanted you to have more than she could provide. Her love for you was so great that she did the hardest thing a mother can do, which is to give you the chance for a better life than she could provide. Blessings to you as you work through this hurt from the past, creating a much better future for yourself.

Joan my heart goes out to you. I’m sure it causes so much pain in wondering why. But just as add. Dispensa spoke about in being able to create our future you have the ability to create you past. You will possibly never know why she did this but you can create your past in your mind in a way that makes you feel like it’s real and better. Maybe she was very young and scared or maybe she was trying to protect you from the terrible life she was living. On top of that, maybe she beats herself up every day for having made a rash decision of leaving you and feels less than for making that choice. You can only see the life you’ve lived so why not add a story to her life that lets you feel better.

      Hi Joan,
I’m no Dr. Joe! I wanted to respond to you, though. I’m so sad you feel so hurt.
Words that might help from attending Dr. Joe’s events:
The past is not now or your future. You can create happiness, fulfillment and everything you want now and into the future by changing the way you think.
Did you read his book: “Changing the habit of being yourself”? Great info and guidance on how to let go of feelings that don’t serve you, and not live in the past..and move forward with excitement and enthusiasm.
By the way, being “rejected” from birth had nothing to do with you. Your mother didn’t even “know” you. She must have been going through a terrible time
and didn’t know how to take care of you, and thought you’d be better off with someone who could take care of you and love you.
It was kind of a gift from her. She knew she could not be a good mother.
Dr. Joe teaches compassion. Have compassion for your birth Mom and gratitude that she left you with people who would take great care of you.
Everyone deserves happiness and success in this life and the Universe provides it for all of us. We just have to “tap” in and allow the greatness to happen. Keep meditating! Keep listening to Dr. Joe. He is so caring, loving and wants the best for us.

    • Wendy June 4, 2018 at 9:25 am - Reply

Joan, every single thing that happens to us is created by us, even by a new born baby. We can’t always know the greater reason why, why a child would choose to experience this, we must just trust that the lessons to be learnt will be afforded by the experience of being abandoned but then possibly mothered by someone else. The baby would’ve come into form to experience this, the person who abandoned the child would’ve agreed to this at a deeper level. We cannot know and we cannot understand from our limited 3D perspective, we must simply trust that there is a greater purpose for the experience. I have used kinesiology to help myself and others release feelings of abandonment, rejection and the mother wound from the energetic field and soul level. I also came to understand that the only pain I suffered was from my mistaken belief that God/universe/source had rejected me and that’s when I found peace and acceptance.

    • Aysha Griffin June 4, 2018 at 4:21 pm - Reply

Dear Joan, I also feel drawn to reply to you — not as a devotee of Dr. Joe, whom I respect and from whom I’ve learned much to alleviate my own self-suffering thoughts, but as a fellow human being who knows what it’s like to be trapped in thoughts about the past, to carry the ideas and emotional pain of abandonment. I don’t think we can ever know “Why” about anything, especially the motivations of others, or even our own. I’ve tried, for example, to remember why I took or left a job, began or ended a relationship, etc. and when I tell it (to myself or another), it can change. It’s just a story. The “facts” are one thing but the interpretations, the whys, and even the hows, are always variable and objectively never knowable. Take for example people who witness a car accident. The fact may be two cars collided, but every witness tells a different story. Or remember the story of the blind men and the elephant? Each touches the elephant, the event, at a different place and from a different mind, and each has a different experience. The fact is that your baby-self was abandoned. But were you “rejected”? Maybe leaving a child is the most loving thing that parent could think to do at the moment. We’ll never know why. The life you’ve been living up to this point is no doubt rich in many adventures and stories. To dwell on the unanswerable WHY is to make-up stories that likely feed negative emotions of unworthiness and keep us stuck in a cycle of being “abandoned” or abandoning others. As adults we have the option, the choice, to tell a different story that supports our most loving, lovable and creative self… A story that moves us into a future of feeling gratitude for all that has happened to bring us to a present moment of seeing our own preciousness, experiencing the feelings, people and events we want to have. By exercising this “muscle” of visualization with emotion, we can create new neural pathways which indeed lead to a different experience of life; an abundant, joyful, love-filled life. But only is we want to. I wish you a beautiful rest of your journey!

Thanks Dr Joe. I still have trouble NOT feeling that lack and would love a “how to” on how not to feel that lack in my everyday life. Even in my meditations it is difficult to get that “elevated emotion” I try to focus on having already what I want whenever I can throughout the day but I still feel lack as I do this as it is NOT here. Live your work and can’t wait to go to the week long !!!

    • David May 31, 2018 at 8:16 am - Reply

NOT feeling is the first step, from there you can go and find the feeling. So long we are not aware, that we can not feel what we want to feel, I would say you are on the right track. We have to do daily work to progress, only that much I can say. We can not understand thing of what we did not have a experience yet. Therefore your saying is just very normal, now if you want to know how this all works, there is only one way, you have to practice and never give up, this is the way people go from nobody to somebody. Joe is very helpful with his work, but he only give the kick off, the road we have to walk, but we never alone on that way.

Not feeling or believing in lack has to come down to confidence and knowing who you truly are (not human). You didn’t create your self, Sis. The One who created you/thought you into being thought of everything when he did. I suggest you meditate on “who am I really?” “where do I come from?”

    • Gina June 2, 2018 at 11:04 pm - Reply

Hi Sue, my ‘how to’ on how not to feel lack is to practice gratitude 😊. When I started to do this I realized how much of the good stuff I had taken for granted. Louise Hay has a wonderful morning meditation on gratitude on YouTube. It really opened my eyes to how much there is in my life to feel blessed about. When I listen to this meditation and continue to think about the things I am grateful for throughot the day,, it’s hard to feel lack. For me this was a breakthrough. I hope this helps 😊. Oh, and of course I also continue to visualize in detail and with emotion the things I would like that havent yet come into my life – but while still appreciating everthing I have in this moment. ❤

Hi Dr. Joe. I don’t know if you actually read these, but I’ll throw this out there for what it’s worth. … I appreciate all of the articles that I read here. They always make me think and reignite my commitment to continue my meditation. One thing I have been wondering consistently in my meditations is whether some people have an easier time holding on to a visual symbol or image, as in the new Blessing of the energy centers meditation, than others. I have always had difficulty visualizing and holding on to an image. Is it possible that in the same way that people pick up information from the field in different ways, that they may also find it easier using different methods in their meditation to focus on what changes they want? For example, some people pick up information from the field, or from others etc., through visual images that come into their mind, (clairvoyant). Some people may pick up information by suddenly hearing something that comes into their mind eg: a word, a phrase, a question etc, (clairaudient). Others suddenly have a feeling/sensation in their body that provides information about the world around them, (clairsentient) while others simply suddenly have a knowing, a deep understanding/clarity about something in the world around them, (claircognizent). Is it possible, then, that if we are typically clairsentient, we focus on the feeling rather than visualize something in our meditation? If we are typically claircognizent is there a way to focus on the knowing instead of a visual image? if we typically are clairaudient, can we focus on hearing the change we want instead of visualizing a symbol in our meditation to represent the change we want to manifest? Is visualizing an image in meditation something that does/should come naturally to everyone? If so, why do some people seem to do it so much easier than others in their meditation practice? Just some thoughts and questions…thanks for your continuous dedication to raising the consciousness levels in the world despite a what must be a very grueling schedule…. Monique

    I have some questions.

The suggestions seems to be “(a part of) the brain does not know the difference between strong imagination and reality.”

Then, what is exactly the difference (for the brain) between strong visualisation, with accompanying emotions, and actual reality?

And, if the future can be created in our brain – and experienced as such – why bother for ‘the real thing’?

Wonderful article! In your research and your experiences, does the thought of the future have to be the catalyst for the experience of the emotion(s) and the new neural pathways that are created as a result?

Isn’t it a possibility to also utilize the focused expression and complete embodiment of the emotion(s) we believe we’ll experience when we’ve created the 3D version of reality we believe we want?

I’ve been experimenting with this a lot and I find that it can be challenging for some people to create the reality in their minds and fully embrace it to the degree that they fully embody the emotional experience of it. In these cases it’s proved to be incredibly powerful to start with the emotional experience and work body up to brain as opposed to brain into body.

Of course the brain or the unconscious mind is still ultimately responsible for the creation of the emotion to some degree and in this model it can allow us to let go of the lack all together and fully appreciate our ability to experience any emotion we choose to. Once the physiology changes, the quality of the thoughts certainly change as well.

I’m really curious about your thoughts on this if you have the time. Thank you!

Dr. Joe is teaching all of us “HOW” to change the way we look at things, and really making us aware that we are truly creating every day… whether or not we are creating what we want depends on our thoughts… Are we saying we want __________ and living in fear and lack ? or do we say what we want with an emotion of belief that we deserve to have it ??? It’s your choice.

Love this article. I’ve always been some what Sprital. However after atending your three day simainar in Austin,Tx in January my blurry vision became clear. Now I know I’m not a freak or even weird. It took three months for me to learn to meditate. Now I know I am a genius.all because of your sharelng the truth . Please come back to Texas or at lest near. I really need a five day and can’t afford to leave the Country. I’m 70 and your teaching have changed my life. I can’t wait to see the next decade after becoming supernatural. I’m almost through with the book Becoming Supernatural and I wake up ready to learn more. I wish I had know this years ago. I’m sharing with my 15 year old granddaughter and she loves it.Thank you so much. Hope to see you in Texas again.

I resonate with Glynda Lane. Would love to see the advanced workshop come to San Diego or Austin. I’ve been visualizing it. I made a name tag for myself on a lanyard that I wear around the house!

Love this article.I have been challenged in the past to to see a different future. However, little by little the past is falling away as I practice daily to let it go and still my mind and body to be aware of of all these past thoughts that kept me in a prison of all kinds of negative emotions. Each day now I see and feel progress as I practice. Days I feel I have it down pat. Next day I catch myself all over the map with thoughts of the past. So start over again and again. I am training my mind to be still and feel what I want to experience in my future. Patience with myself is imperative. Giving up is no longer an option. I express gratitude for my breath,.my life and Dr Joe showing me the way. Blessing to all. Thank you to all who comment for you as well give energy to keep going.

Thank you Dr. Joe…for this perfectly timed & worded article. I’ve been doing your work…& your meditations…but i too, had slipped back into old mental habits. Your reminder to live in “an elevated emotional state” was my “AHA” moment…& “it” all came together for me with profound clarity. I’m naming it my LIBERATION DAY!!!
As a Christian, I can now look at the verse…”For the JOY that was set BEFORE Him, He endures the cross”…& see this very principle in action in the life of Christ. Profound & powerful.

Thank you for your teachings Dr Joe. I read Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself and have been doing the daily meditations for about 2 months now. Your work is nothing short of incredible. I have at have learned through these teachings that my feelings of lack and unworthyness are known and comfortable. Also, l can satisfy my need to be right if it doesn’t happen. I work everyday to overcome these programs, not done yet but at least l am aware.

I love it. Thank you again Dr. Dispenza for everything you have written and continue to. I have listened to your book Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself 9 times already and try do the meditation that comes with it as much as I can and now I’m reading your most recent book. I love your work and especially because you don’t mix religion into your research and it’s all backed up by your research and science, even though I am spiritual. Please do continue your wonderful work.

    Aisha and Eydie,
I just wanted to say I was very moved by your warm and wise words. Your observations were spot-on and beautifully conveyed. I am not the writer of the original post, but I completely get the sentiment and have been replaced-orientating my perspective of abandonment also from a parent committing suicide when I was four. How long have I experienced my life from a point of the story of abandonment, and subsequently re-created that?? Thanks to Dr Joe’s work, I now SEE so much more clearly. I acknowledge that my mind and body want to remain in the deeply grooved patterns that are familiar… do these reminders from the blog and from others on the same journey are essential for getting me back on track. I am grateful to be part of such a stellar community with such a passionate teacher.

Great words of wisdom Aysha, it is great what you said!! Would be wonderful if more people had the perspective that you have!! These days it is so easy to be bogged down and swamped by negative emotions and negative cynical people. Many thanks and regards.

Dear loving Dr Joe, Thank you so much for sharing the wisdom you have learned from your life experiences. Through your workshops, books and these emails you continually coach me that my words, thoughts, feelings and actions are responsible for my world, my life. You encourage, remind, and suggest with love and compassion how to become the highest ideal of myself I can be each day.. My meditations are my deep connection to my Source and you have taught me how to get in touch with who I am-an awesome godling with infinite abilities to be and become whoever I desire. I have learned that the only reason I am here is to learn how to love myself. The only way I can love others is to love myself first. Dr Joe, you are a light and a gift to thisplanet and the populations choosing to live here in this time. I am thankful for you.
